The Devices screen will display all available devices by IMEI or friendly name, whether it is being used in a talkgroup or not, and all available talkgroups.
Administrators can also update the device name, view the IMEI and assign it to up to 15 different talkgroups (depending on the amount of talkgroups purchased).
Priority talkgroups can also be defined which ensures the device switches to the talkgroup automatically whenever someone speaks.
Sharing Talkgroups
In the event you would like to share an active Talkgroup outside of your organization, you can do so by simply obtaining the Share Code from the organization you would like to share with and adding the Share Code to the desired Talkgroup.
When sharing a talkgroup you will be required to define:
-> Start Date
-> End Date
-> Maximum Amount of Devices
A “Shared” talkgroup is one that you have shared with another Subscriber Organization so they may have access to communicate with the other talkgroup members. A “Shared with you” talkgroup is owned and shared by another Subscriber Organization so you can communicate with that organization’s talkgroup members.
A talkgroup share can be modified or deleted at any time outside of the previously defined start date, end date and maximum devices.
Good Reasons to Use the Stronger and More Reliable Iridium Push-to-Talk Service
With the Iridium® NEXT satellite constellation, the Iridium network continues to provide the best, most reliable coverage on the market. For Iridium Push-To-Talk (PTT), this means customers can push group communications beyond what any other network is able to offer. Iridium PTT already has a reputation for its functionality. In 2016 it earned the Top Emergency Response Innovation Award from the Mobile Satellite Users Association. Now with an improved network and major service updates, Iridium PTT services have grown stronger, faster, and more reliable than ever before.
How Iridium PTT service has improved:
New Network: Iridium NEXT is the largest ‘tech refresh’ in space history. By replacing its existing satellites with more capable ones, Iridium is improving its overall performance and connectivity for its customers.
Higher Capacity: The Iridium NEXT satellites have higher capacity and therefore more channels are available for all services, including PTT. In areas of high congestion, this significantly reduces the risk of issues such as call-drop or call-fade.
Faster Call Connections: Iridium NEXT provides increased crosslink and feederlink capacity which supports significantly higher traffic loads and improves call connectivity speeds.
Improved Voice Quality: Reports from end users have confirmed that the Iridium NEXT constellation results in more consistent processing and transport of voice packets. This minimizes issues associated with slurring and distortion and improves the voice quality of the Iridium PTT service.
Firmware Upgrades: Iridium has worked on major firmware and service improvements for PTT, resulting in fewer dropped sessions and improved call reliability. These upgrades give you an even stronger lifeline than before.
Longer PTT Sessions: In October 2018, we expect to introduce a firmware update which will increase the amount of time a customer can have the floor on a PTT session from 20 to 40 seconds. This means that customers can talk longer, benefiting from clear and reliable communications regardless of where they are in the world.
Iridium PTT customers can easily configure their talkgroups and coverage areas through the Iridium PTT Command Center, a user-friendly online tool. Talkgroups are easily adjustable on the fly, and users have the option to make different talkgroups interoperable for when they need to coordinate with another group.
With seven out of eight Iridium NEXT launches complete, much of the network traffic is already being carried by the new satellites.
The Iridium NEXT constellation bringing even stronger connections and even more reliable services than before. Through the constellation upgrade, the services continue to evolve, and the lines of products continue to grow.
Iridium will continue to innovate to allow customers to coordinate reliably without depending on nearby ground infrastructure.

Iridium® Push-To-Talk Best Practices
A truly global satellite radio is a critical communication tool for a variety of scenarios.
While standard mobile phones require very little preparation and training, satellite-enabled devices may be unfamiliar to users at first.
It is important to ensure your team is familiar with the recommendations of how to best use two-way satellite radio communications.
Be Prepared Before Talking
• Before using your Iridium Push-to-Talk (PTT) enabled device, charge the battery and turn the phone on.
• Make sure the device is within the geographic area covered by your Iridium PTT talkgroup.
• Two-way radios are a “one-at-a-time” system; when you press the Push-to-Talk button, no one else in your group can speak or be heard.
• In order to make the most of your talk session and avoid blocking other speakers, it is important to think about your message in advance.
Identify Yourself and the Recipient of Your Message
There may be a group of intended users all sharing the same PTT talkgroup, so it is important to identify yourself and your target audience immediately when you initiate a transmission.
Talker’s name will appear on the screen if provided in the Command Center.
Be Patient
The other user(s) in your talkgroup may not be able to respond immediately. Give them time to reply.
Use Short, Clear and Concise Messages
As two-way radios only allow one person to speak at a time, it is best to keep your transmissions clear and to the point.
This gives other users an opportunity to acknowledge your message and/or request further clarification before continuing on with your next point.
Know How Much Time You Have To Talk
You have a total of 40 seconds to say your message before your session expires.
If your message is longer than the allowed talk time, simply press the push-to-talk button again and share the rest of your message.
Pause Before Speaking
When you first press the PTT button, there can be a short delay before your message transmits which could result in your first few words being truncated.
Wait a second before speaking to be sure your listeners receive your whole message.
Learn the Lingo
Two-way radio communications are most effective when everyone understands and uses similar language and etiquette, especially when there are more than two people in the talkgroup.
• “Over” – I’ve finished speaking
• “Say again” – Repeat your last message
• “Stand-by” – I acknowledge your transmission, but can’t respond right now
• “Go ahead” – I can respond, go ahead with your message
• “Roger” – message received and understood
• “Out” – Conversation is finished, the channel is clear for other users
Quick Tips
• Deploy Antenna for maximum signal strength and improved stand-by use.
• Keep your device antenna extended and vertically oriented whenever you want/need to be accessible.
• If signal strength is weak, attempt repositioning your device.
• Press the PTT button and wait for the beep before talking.
• Hold the handset approximately 4 in. (10 cm.) from your mouth when talking.
• Identify yourself and recipient of message.
• Be Patient! The recipient may be busy.
• Turn the volume to an appropriate level for your environment.
• Speak slowly and clearly.
• Test your Iridium PTT-enabled device on a monthly basis.
• Ask us for the latest Iridium PTT firmware.
